Huawei Anounces The New Smart Watch 2 Pro For China Comes With Support For eSIM Technology.
Huawei held their launch event in multiple locations around the world but the reveal of the Watch 2 Pro was reserved exclusively for their Chinese launch event. The Watch 2 Pro looks strikingly similar to the Watch 2 Classic that they have previously released. And it is indeed similar to the Watch 2 Classic, except for the fact that this new smartwatch supports eSIM technology. Many smartwatch manufacturers have chosen to exclude cellular connectivity in their watches because including a SIM card takes up valuable space inside already cramped quarters, but this issue is alleviated thanks to eSIM technology.
As Google services are not allowed in China, the standard Android Wear builds with Google services (As Assistant) are not allowed as well. We see some of the same functionality on the Watch 2 Pro though, and that is due to Huawei using a stripped down version of Android Wear for the region. As pointed out by a comment on Android Police, Google even has a dedicated developer support page specifically for Android Wear application developers who want to release their app in China.
As far as hardware specs go, the Huawei Watch 2 Pro has a 1.2″ AMOLED display protected by Gorilla Glass. It uses 22mm straps and comes with a leather strap in the box. Inside the Watch 2 Pro, you get 4GB of internal storage, 768MB of RAM and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 SoC. Thanks to the eSIM, it can connect to LTE / WCDMA / GSM, support Unicom 4G / 3G / 2G networks. The Huawei Watch 2 Pro also has 2.4GHz 802.11 b / g / n support, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS built in, is IP68 certified and has a 420mAh capacity battery.
